Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Brosnan are considering leaving their longtime Malibu home after more than two decades at the oceanfront property, as wildfire risks, earthquake concerns and changing family circumstances reshape their priorities.
The couple, who have been together since meeting in 1994 and married in Ireland in 2001, have built much of their family life around the Malibu estate. They raised their two sons, Dylan and Paris, there while also maintaining a strong connection to environmental causes and a quieter lifestyle away from Hollywood.
Now, with their children grown and the realities of maintaining a large coastal property becoming more significant, the former James Bond star has indicated that the family may be ready for a change.
How Brosnan and Keely Built Orchid House
The Malibu property has been closely tied to the Brosnans’ family life since 2000, when they purchased two adjoining parcels on Broad Beach for a combined $7.35 million.
The couple initially lived in an existing mid-century house on the property. They eventually demolished the structure and spent years developing a custom oceanfront residence that reflected their personal tastes and travels.
The resulting estate, known as Orchid House, was designed by architects Ralph and Ross Anderson. Drawing inspiration in part from Southeast Asian architecture, the property features extensive glass walls, tropical landscaping and approximately 120 feet of ocean frontage.
The project took roughly a decade to complete and eventually became a private family retreat where the Brosnans raised their sons.
The residence has been described as spanning roughly 12,500 to 13,000 square feet and includes a range of high-end amenities. Among them are a private cinema, spa, gym, studio spaces and expansive outdoor areas overlooking the Pacific.
Why the Couple May Be Ready to Move
Brosnan recently discussed the possibility of leaving Malibu in an interview with The Times, pointing to the area’s exposure to natural disasters as one factor behind the family’s thinking.
Wildfires have become an increasingly serious concern across Southern California, while earthquake risks add another layer of uncertainty for residents along the coast. The Brosnans have reportedly avoided serious damage during several fires, but the experience has nevertheless influenced how they view the future of their Malibu home.
The property’s size and ongoing upkeep also appear to be part of the equation.
Maintaining a large oceanfront estate comes with substantial expenses beyond the initial purchase and construction costs. Brosnan has acknowledged the financial demands associated with the property, while also reflecting on how Malibu itself has changed over the years.
Friends and neighbors have moved away, divorced or died, altering the community that once surrounded the family. With Dylan and Paris now adults, the sprawling residence also no longer serves the same purpose it did when the children were growing up.
Taken together, those factors appear to have prompted the couple to reconsider whether Malibu remains the right long-term home.
Orchid House Has Been on the Market Before
The possibility of another sale is not entirely new.
In 2020, Orchid House was reportedly listed for approximately $100 million, placing it among the more closely watched celebrity properties on the Malibu market. The listing drew attention not only because of its extraordinary price but also because of the estate’s distinctive design and connection to Brosnan’s career as James Bond.
The property was not ultimately sold at that time, allowing the couple to continue living there and maintaining their long-standing connection to Malibu.
Their relationship with the estate has therefore extended well beyond its value as a piece of luxury real estate. It was conceived as a dream home and became the setting for an important period of their family life.
A Growing Connection to Hawaii
The couple owns a smaller home on Kauai, where Brosnan has described a more private and relaxed way of living. Compared with their expansive Malibu estate, the Hawaii property provides a simpler setting, including a three-bedroom cottage, chickens and a yurt that Brosnan uses as a painting space.
That lifestyle appears to fit the couple’s priorities as they enter a different stage of life.
Brosnan has long maintained interests beyond acting, including environmental advocacy and visual art. His Hawaii retreat provides space for those interests while offering greater privacy away from the demands of Hollywood.
More Than a Celebrity Real-Estate Story
For Brosnan and Keely, a potential departure from Orchid House would represent more than the sale of a valuable Malibu property.
The home was purchased at the beginning of a major chapter in their family life and developed over many years into a highly personal residence. It was where they raised their children and established a private retreat shaped by their travels, interests and appreciation for the natural environment.
At the same time, circumstances have changed. Their sons are now adults, the risks associated with living in a fire-prone coastal region have become more prominent, and the demands of maintaining a large estate may no longer align with the couple’s priorities.
For now, reports indicate that Brosnan and Keely are considering or preparing to leave Orchid House, rather than confirming that the property has been sold to a new owner.
If they ultimately move on, the decision would close a significant chapter in the Brosnans’ lives. After more than two decades in Malibu, the couple may be choosing a smaller, quieter and more private future in Hawaii—one that reflects where they are in life today.
